whistling in the graveyard

Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències
Valencia, Spain

a ribcage
of stone and steel
rise
as earth and skin
fall away in decay

flesh-stripped
scaffolding
sharply buttresses
a new kind of body

old bones erupt
from the sunken corpse;
a life given
for a body as lifeless
as the remains from which it
rises.

with no lungs
to respire,
air randomly fills
and empties
the cavity
of her cavernous chest

breathless breathing
as air enters and exits
in its own time.
of its own accord.

watch
and pray
that the whoosh
of needless oxygen
blowing through

does not whistle

for surely
the devil will hear
and come running.

the doors
will open,
bid him enter,
and welcome
his possession.

Never whistle in a graveyard, you are summoning the Devil.
