On Advent – IV: Displaced Darkness?

Last night

We watched the candles
Lighted

And saw the darkness
Shift,

Almost tangibly,

Like we could have reached
up and captured it
in our hands

as it lifted from the floor
of waxy illumination.

But no one reached.

Who would?

Then we blew out the candles and sat
in the gloom

Again.

Until we
turned on
some other lights,

And drove off
into the night.

The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness—
    on them light has shined.

Isaiah 9:2

He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him.

John 1:10-11
