The Gambler

He took the news chin jutting bold;
He chose to bet instead of fold.
Inside, his soul was quaking, true
And come the eve, fast turn to blue;
Mistakes that haunt ’til gray and old.

From other players taken cue
But misread signals did ensue
The stone-cold bluff his cards foretold
He took the news.

Casinos lie – it’s all fool’s gold
He bought fake joy the dealer sold
In fact – why one? – let’s take home two!
The purchase he would ever rue;
In just a year, might be paroled…
He took the news.
