partners
inexplicably, inextricably
linked to think, act, feel
as one
except when they aren’t
linked
synced
indistinct
at each other’s throats
speaking in tongues
unheard
misunderstood
all systems break down
tend toward disorder
lasting structures require work
and this machine needs a rest
how much energy goes in?
keepingthingsinorder
how much is lost in the process?
remindingselftoseekefficiencies
energy, never created
cannot be destroyed
just misplaced, forgotten
transferred
returning scattered atoms
to original boxes
maybe not original
but ordered in some new places
looks different for everyone
we fight, we fume, she walks the dog
then the jokes start, and we laugh
until we cry – good tears now
our children in mock horror
faces masking smiles
that’s when we know
we’re back on track
and can do this
a little while longer.
