I think of underdogs today
and choose to go a different way
of childhood days of slides and swings
monkey bars and other things
Specific memories at play
ice cream, family, rivers, clay
at night, on bikes, we felt like kings
my uncle by the campfire sings
a song that echoes – he, then they
we’d beg for more, he’d laugh and stay
for just one more, the guitar rings
as cousin joins his dad and brings
a sweet communion, day goes gray
stories, songs, as if to pray
dear God, thanks for the joy that springs
it even soothes the boys’ bee stings
I could go on, my thoughts would stray
for hours, like times we’d play and sway
of childhood days of slides and swings
monkey bars and other things

I’m glad you feel the joy even though you weren’t there. I was afraid it might not be “universal” enough.

❤️ So sweet and nostalgic. It’s best to remember the good times rather than dwell on the bad. Thank you so much for joining in.

It’s an ode to a lifetime of camping reunions, canceled this year because of COVID-19. I shared it on my Kohns Reunion Facebook Group (closed group – sorry) and we’re already having fun reminiscing. I may need to add some verses. I don’t care if anyone else reads or likes it. 🙂
