Sonnet X – night blindness

The thing most true was never true for me
until one day it dawned and ended night
I’d felt my way and falsehoods would agree
in darkness lies the place that’s best to fight
duck in, duck out, left jab, an upper cut
me taking hits while never punching back
surprised? You think I’d tire of fists in gut?
the strangest thing – I thought I was on track.
but paths in darkness take you who knows where?
you get “there” but it all looks quite the same
look to the east – a glow – a fresh’ning air
my shadow lengthens – with it takes my shame

I’m running now – in full light see my trail
the roots and stones which tripped, now mostly fail.
