gravity

what goes up
must come down

physics’ laws apply
beyond the world
of weight and mass

I’m down
but up will come again,
right?

Right?

Damn, the up was good,
so good.
but remembering it
doesn’t seem to be
loosening gravity’s hold
this time

How to rise again?

Hold tight and wait out
the inevitable cycle?
Will myself into weightlessness?
Go hunting for helium?

Maya kept on rising

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

She experienced
gravity’s
pull

trodden into dirt

like I never have
and never will.

Sometimes,
perspective
is
everything.

I’m down
I can’t and won’t deny it
but still, I too, will rise

Here on the pulse of this new day
You may have the grace to look up and out
And into your sister’s eyes, into
Your brother’s face, your country
And say simply
Very simply
With hope
Good morning.
