Sonnet XVII- navel gazing

Beauty surrounds us, with ugly and vile;
Training your eye is the trick of the Thing.
But more than the eye must be taught how to smile;
Get out of your head, if your heart needs to Sing.
But not just the brain, get your focus off gut;
Gazing the navel will skew what is true.
Head and Heart gone – is there anything but?
Ah yes – there are Others – they brighten the hue.
Gaze at THEIR heads and THEIR hearts to find Beauty;
Your Inner World often can lead you astray.
See the Whole Picture and make it your Duty;
Inside and Outside will show you the Way.
I may not excel at the Outer quite yet;
But I’m trying like hell ~ on that you can bet.
